Live Baits for catfishing is always a good idea if available. Shad, Bluegill*, Carp, Goldfish, Tilapia, Suckers, Chubs are popular live baits used to catch big catfish.
* Although bluegill can be a popular cut and live bait, its illegal to use bluegill as bait in most of California. The exception is the Colorado River, where bluegill is legal as a bait. Check CA DFG for more details.
